Shunji Iwai is currently my most favorite filmmaker, a title previously held by Chan-Wook Park, Kenji Kamiyama, and Hideaki Anno.

I just finished watching April Story by a favorite filmmaker, Shunji Iwai. It’s a simple love story, almost trite, but its simplicity is unpredictable — one is shocked in disbelief that something so beautiful could come from something so simple. Of course the narrative wouldn’t have worked if the characters weren’t beautiful.
In my world, love is only for beautiful people....
